FAQs – About Cockapoo Health

Overview of Our Puppies:

You will be provided a deworming and vaccination medical record in the puppy packet when you pick up your puppy. Please let us know if you need any of his or her medical information before that date. All our puppies visit the veterinarian at least once, usually around six-seven weeks old, and receive their first vaccines before they go to their new homes at eight-nine weeks old.

We offer a 1 year health guarantee (you can read this in full on our Contract/Guarantee page). Puppy is guaranteed to be free of life-threatening congenital defects until one year from the date of puppy’s birth–this will be extended to three years of age if the NuVet supplemental vitamin is given during that entire time.

As a breeder partner with Trupanion, all our puppies are pre-approved for a special introductory offer with their pet medical insurance, and we provide an offer code to sign up for coverage. This coverage must be activated by the buyer within 24 hours of the go-home date. Insurance for at least the first 30 days is required for all of our families/puppies.

Overview of Our Dogs:

We genetically test all of our parent dogs for PRA/PRCD (unless clear by parentage), and bring them for CERF tests on a regular basis. We also do genetic (DNA) testing, as well as having our vet perform patella/knee/OFA exams.

We give all our dogs and puppies NuVet Nutritional Supplements to help boost their immune systems. It is full of herbs, vitamins and minerals to help keep them in the best of health. We believe giving them this supplement reduces the risk of many potential health issues.

Frequently Asked Questions – About Testing in the Cockapoo Breed

Q: What tests do you do on your dogs?
A: Our adult dogs have a CAER (eye) exam done by a canine ophthalmologist on a regular basis. We also do some genetic (DNA) testing, as well as having our vet perform OFA/patella x-rays/exams on our dogs. Read below for more information about these tests and exams.

Q: What is a CAER exam?
A: CAER stands for Companion Animal Eye Registry. A certified ophthalmologist examines the dogs for specific canine defects involving the eyes, such as cataracts. These results are then sent to the OFA to be confirmed and certified.

Q: What is DNA testing?
A: DNA testing can be done with canine samples of cheek swabs or blood draws, depending on the test. We use DNA testing on all of our dogs to make sure they are not affected with PRCD (Progressive Rod Cone Degeneration), which is a genetically passed eye disease. All of our parent dogs have been genetically tested for this disease, or are clear by parentage.

Q: What is OFA/patella testing?
A: OFA stands for the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals. This organization certifies testing/x-rays, including on canine hips and elbows for specific genetic defects. Patella exams are for the knees, which is where most joint problems would occur in dogs the size and parent breeds of Cockapoos. All of our dogs have had their patellas examined by our vet, and are free of patellar luxation.
