FAQs – Puppy Care & Training

Our Cockapoo puppies are born and raised in our home, loved and played with by our family and friends, and our goal is always to have them be happy and healthy family companions!

Enrichment & Socialization
By the time the puppies are five weeks old, we have started them on pad/tray training. The puppies are used to typical household noises (vacuum cleaner, people going in and out doors, TV, people stopping to pet them or pick them up, etc.) They are well socialized by the time they are eight weeks old, and most of them are extremely friendly, even with strangers.

We utilize the following enrichment methods: Sound Stimulation, Household Desensitization, Touch Desensitization, Potty Training, Socialized with Children, Socialized with Adult Dogs, “No” Biting or Chewing, Grooming Desensitization, Touch Desensitization, and Toys, e.g. Ball, Chew, Bone.

Included with Puppy
We send our puppies home with a bag including: Stuffed Toy with Scent of Mom and Litter Mates, Chew Sticks, Puppy Food Starter Bag, Starter Bell for House Training, and Breed Club Registration.

Our personal recommendations for basic puppy supplies as of 2025

Crate:
There are two primary types of crates: wire and plastic/enclosed.
The wire crates are generally nice for having at home as a safe place for the puppy to stay if he ever needs to be left alone. I recommend at least a 24” size in adulthood, though you will need to utilize a removable divider while he’s still a smaller puppy.

The plastic/enclosed kennels are best for traveling, but the exact size allowed for flights is determined by the airlines.

Dog bed:
There are various types and sizes of dog beds, and most of them are acceptable options. I don’t recommend putting a bed into the crate until the puppy is fully house/crate trained so as to not allow them to start any negative habits with an absorbent cushion in that space.

Treats/snacks:
Generally it’s best to avoid giving an excess of treats or anything other than their puppy food, but I like using tiny bits of freeze dried meat or Zuke’s Mini Naturals when training and teaching new skills.

Chews:
I find that plain rawhide bones are great for the puppies while they’re teething, but those need to be removed/disposed of if the pup begins to ingest too much of the rawhide.

Toys:
There are many types of safe dog toys that the puppies may enjoy. I personally provide the Bark brand to my pups (as well as the Super Chewer option for some of the adult dogs), and enroll for their monthly Bark Box of themed toys.

House:
I use potty trays with disposable or washable absorbent pads for the puppies to have a safe space to potty/poop in the house. This can be continued for your pup, or you can transition them to only outdoor potty opportunities.

When training for the outdoors, I highly recommend using bell training to teach your puppy an easy way to alert you when they need to go out. Simply hang the bell next to your door, and pay it with your puppy’s paw to ring it every time you take him out, and be sure to take him outside immediately if/when he rings it to reinforce the learned behavior.
